House Makkonen was the largest of the staunchly pro-royal houses on the Island before its shift in allegiances to House Pellervoinen and is one of the most militarily ready. The head of the house changed in early 814, from Markus Makkonen, a brawler disgraced by links to the slave trade to his cousin Atlas Makkonen, known for his righteous idealism. The source of the house's considerable wealth is now known to be based on a secret slaving ring, and they have put some considerable sums of it into jewels and art.
